A Brentwood homeowner had two problems: an eroded hillside that looked terrible from the deck, and very little privacy from the neighbors. CalifauxScapes designed and installed 600 square feet of UV-resistant hedges to fix both. The whole project took three weeks.
High-end residential properties in Brentwood often sit on slopes that either expose the neighbors or create odd blind spots from the main living areas. This property had both: a steeply eroded hillside visible from the master bedroom deck, and almost no privacy on the south side where the main outdoor seating area faced a nearby neighbor's bedroom windows.
The homeowner wanted something that would look like a permanent upgrade to the property (not a patch or temporary fix), would block views immediately, and wouldn't require watering, pruning, or seasonal care. CalifauxScapes recommended a 600 square foot artificial hedge solution using UV-stabilized materials for long-term color and durability.
The slope created two separate zones: the west side of the deck overlooked an eroded, barren hillside that undermined what was otherwise high-end landscaping. The south side, where the homeowner liked to spend evenings, had clear sightlines to the neighbor's home and their windows. The solution had to work at scale without looking like it was installed in sections or phases.
The homeowner also wanted the hedge to look built into the property, not like a temporary addition. That meant clean attachment points, consistent height, and no gaps or misalignment. Since this was a high-end property, the final look mattered as much as the function.
We proposed a two-zone artificial hedge installation: one section to cover and disguise the eroded hillside (creating a natural-looking green "wall" from inside the house), and another along the south property line to create privacy for the seating area.
We specified UV-resistant materials to ensure the color would hold for years without needing frequent renewal. We also planned the attachment method upfront: using galvanized posts set into the hillside and deck framing to mount hedge panels so they'd be secure and visually seamless.
The design called for a consistent 6-foot height across both zones so it would read as one unified privacy solution, not two separate installations.
We started with a site survey to confirm the slope of the hillside, the framing underneath the deck, and the sightlines from both the home's interior and the seating area. This let us map where posts would be anchored and how to orient the hedge panels for maximum privacy and visual impact.
Custom-cut hedge panels were fabricated offsite to match the slope and length of each zone. On installation day, we installed the galvanized posts first, then mounted the hedge panels with careful alignment so seams would be minimal and consistent.
The whole project took three weeks from kickoff to completion, including site surveying, material prep, and final install.
The hillside behind the west side of the deck is now a dense green backdrop that looks like thoughtful landscaping, not a remedial cover-up. From inside the house, the eroded slope has disappeared from view, replaced by lush artificial foliage that complements the interior décor.
On the south side, the privacy hedge created a clear boundary between the homeowner's seating area and the neighbor's space. The height and density block direct sightlines while maintaining the overall aesthetic of the backyard. The hedge looks permanent and intentional, not temporary or makeshift.
With UV-stabilized materials, the color should remain vibrant for many seasons with no watering, pruning, or seasonal swaps. The homeowner got the privacy they wanted, the look they envisioned, and a low-maintenance solution that actually stays looking good.
